Free Chicago Museum Tours

Looking for a free Chicago museum close to the downtown area? Located in the historic Gold Coast is the Museum of Surgical Science. This museum is free on Tuesdays and is open everyday except for Mondays.

The Museum building is one of the few remaining lakefront mansions and the only one open to the public. The building received historic status in 1988 and is listed in the National Register and the Illinois Register of Historic Places and is a City of Chicago Landmark. Both buildings in the photo are currently owned by The International College of Surgeons. The South building functions as the head quarters location for the non-for-profit entity and is currently available for sale for $17,000,000.

1516 N. Lake Shore Dr. is a 4 story Limestone building, with nearly 12,000 sq ft of livable space. The Chicago Mansion was purchased by  Dr. Max Thorek and the International College of Surgeons. After several years of renovating the building and forming the Museum collection, the Museum opened its doors to the public for the first time in 1954 under the direction of Dr. Max Thorek.
